508 Kenji Makes His Mark on ‘The Franchise Report’.

New Bedford rapper and rocker 508 Kenji made his debut on The Franchise Report, bringing confidence, energy, and a fusion of hip-hop and emo rock to the show.

Blending Hip-Hop and Emo Rock

Introducing himself as “The Goth Prince Rockstar,” 19-year-old 508 Kenji detailed his unique musical style, influenced by both old-school hip-hop and early 2000s emo rock. Raised on artists like Eminem and bands like Pierce the Veil and Falling in Reverse, he found a way to merge both worlds in his music. His first rap memory? Likely Like Toy Soldiers by Eminem or Shook Ones Pt. II by Mobb Deep.

Cultural Roots and Early Music Journey

Kenji, who is Cape Verdean, Filipino, and Black, grew up in New Bedford, standing out as one of the only “emo Blazian” kids in his community. His music journey began in eighth grade when he performed a rap dedicated to his late grandmother at a school talent show, using the instrumental from Like Toy Soldiers. The moment sparked his passion for lyricism and self-expression through rap.

From the Mic to the Ring

Beyond music, Kenji is also an amateur boxer. He’s been training for five years and was a finalist in the 2024 Southern New England Golden Gloves tournament. Balancing music and boxing, he currently holds a 1-1 record and is eager to step back into the ring this spring. His reason for picking up the sport? Growing up in New Bedford, he felt the need to defend himself as he embraced his individuality.

Family Influence and Musical Background

Kenji credits his father for introducing him to old-school hip-hop, while his household was filled with everything from disco to classic rap icons like Slick Rick and Shock G. His mother, a chef from the Philippines, supports his music—despite initially adjusting to his emo rock influences. As for cooking? Kenji admits he hasn’t inherited his mother’s culinary skills beyond making ramen.

Music, College, and Career Aspirations

While music remains his top priority, Kenji has plans to further his education. He’s set on attending community college and studying psychology, fascinated by how the human mind works.

Learning from the Greatest

When asked who he’d seek career advice from, Kenji didn’t hesitate—Michael Jackson. He believes the King of Pop made an unmatched impact on the world and would have been the ultimate mentor.

As he wrapped up his appearance, Kenji was ready to prove his skills with a freestyle, determined to make his mark on the industry.
