Elon Musk’s X experienced a major outage Thursday morning, with over 26,000 users in the U.S. reporting disruptions. The issues followed a fire at one of X’s leased data centers in Hillsboro, Oregon, though the company has not confirmed a link.
The fire, confined to a battery storage room, required an extended emergency response but caused no serious injuries. Downdetector shows the outage peaked around 9 a.m. ET, hitting app users hardest (68%) compared to desktop (24%).
Users in New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Florida, and Atlanta were most affected. Frustrated Reddit users criticized X’s staffing and operational practices, with some blaming cost-cutting.
This marks X’s second major outage in 2025. A March incident was blamed on a cyberattack, though no evidence was presented.
