WhatsApp Introduces Writing Help Tool to Adjust Message Tone and Rephrase Text.

WhatsApp has introduced a new Writing Help tool designed to improve how messages are written and modify their tone. The feature can make messages sound more professional, funny, or supportive, and it can also rephrase text to convey ideas more clearly. Users familiar with Instagram’s writing assistant may find it similar in function.

On WhatsApp, the tool can be accessed in both 1:1 and group chats by tapping a new pencil icon on the keyboard. At launch, Writing Help supports English and is available in the U.S. and a few other countries, with plans to expand to more languages and regions later this year. While WhatsApp has not explicitly stated it, the feature appears to use Meta AI for generating responses, though Meta emphasizes that it does not read or store users’ messages.

The tool operates using Meta’s Private Processing technology, which processes messages off-device in a secure environment. Meta explains that no one, including Meta or WhatsApp, can access the messages, and they are not stored after the processing is complete. By default, Private Processing is disabled, and users must enable it under Settings > Chat > Private Processing to use Writing Help.

Earlier in 2025, WhatsApp added Message Summaries, another optional feature that requires Private Processing to be enabled. Users can also choose to disable AI features for specific chats by accessing Advanced Chat Privacy in the contact or group settings.
