Walmart Is Bringing Its First Branded Stores to South Africa This Year.

Walmart will launch its first branded stores in Africa this year, beginning with locations in South Africa. Although the U.S. retailer already operates in the country through Massmart, which it fully acquired in 2022, this marks the first time Walmart’s own name and storefront will appear in the region. The move places Walmart alongside local competitors such as Shoprite, Woolworths, and Pick n Pay, while also opening opportunities to collaborate with African suppliers to meet customer needs.

In a statement, Walmart said the expansion highlights its commitment to making affordable merchandise widely accessible. The stores will carry a range of groceries, household goods, and technology products, while also featuring locally sourced items. President and CEO Kath McLay emphasized that the company aims to deliver everyday low prices while celebrating South African culture by partnering with local suppliers and entrepreneurs.

The retailer is also positioning itself for growth in e-commerce, where Amazon and Takealot.com remain strong competitors. Walmart plans to open several stores by the end of the year, with the first expected to launch in October.

Beyond retail, the company outlined commitments to supporting South African communities through initiatives in food security, disaster relief, entrepreneurship, job creation, and sustainability. Miles Van Rensburg, Massmart president and CEO, added that Walmart seeks to build lasting relationships with local communities and deliver a shopping experience tailored to South African customers.
