Universal Music Group (UMG) has acquired 8Ball Music, an independent music company based in the Netherlands. According to filings from the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce, UMG became the sole shareholder of 8Ball Music on February 12, 2025.
Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Hilversum, 8Ball Music operates as a multidisciplinary record company, engaging in artist management, live events, and sponsorships. The label’s roster includes well-known Dutch artists such as Miss Montreal, DI-RECT, Davina Michelle, Dotan, and Maan.
This acquisition aligns with UMG’s strategy of expanding its presence in independent music markets. In recent years, UMG has acquired or increased its stakes in several independent music companies, including Belgium-based [PIAS], Japan’s A-Sketch, and Nigeria’s Mavin Records. The company has also made significant investments in artist and label services, such as its purchase of Downtown Music Holdings in 2024.
The deal comes amid discussions about market consolidation in the European music industry. IMPALA, an organization representing independent music companies, has expressed concerns about the impact of major acquisitions on competition. The group has called for regulatory oversight to ensure independent labels and artists continue to have opportunities in the industry.
