Three autistic African American women, Aaliyah Alicia Thompson and twin sisters Anajiah and Aniah Byrd, are breaking barriers in Atlanta, Georgia, with their innovative natural hair salon and beauty school, Aaliyah Beauty Bar. Their work focuses on empowering individuals with autism to master hairstyling skills while addressing challenges posed by traditional licensing processes.
Aaliyah, the founder, established a beauty school tailored for kids with autism, teaching techniques such as locs, loc extensions, and retwists. Recognizing the limitations of the state cosmetology board’s process, the trio has concentrated on mastering natural hair care. Their efforts have garnered a loyal clientele and glowing online reviews.
Beyond their salon, Aaliyah is providing opportunities through scholarships, offering five individuals on the autism spectrum mentorship and training to learn hairstyling. Her dedication to empowerment showcases the potential of individuals with autism to thrive in creative industries.
“Aaliyah’s vision is a testament to the potential and creativity of individuals on the autism spectrum,” says Patricia Thompson, Aaliyah’s mother. “Their success proves that, with the right support, anyone can achieve their dreams.”
