Throughout his career, The Weeknd has broken many records. Most recently, he added to his list by shattering the record for the largest concert attendance at London Stadium.
The historic occasion occurred over the course of the XO leader’s two-night stay at the location this past weekend as part of his After Hours ‘Til Dawn Tour, which on Friday (July 7) brought in 160,000 spectators. During the performance, The Weeknd persuaded 80,000 of those spectators to join in on his My Dear Melancholy song “Call Out My Name.”
Omar Al-joulani, the Touring President of Live Nation, expressed his admiration for the record-breaking occasion in a statement to Variety.
Omar Al-joulani stated, “It’s amazing to see the Weeknd hit this milestone less than halfway through his massive sold-out European run.” This significant event in London demonstrates his devoted following on a global scale.
After a massive, wildly successful U.S. tour, Darryl Eaton, co-head of CAA’s North American touring division, continued, “Abel continues to sell at an unbelievable pace across Europe. Abel thrilled 160,000 spectators over the course of two nights at London Stadium, and he will perform again in London at Wembley in August. We couldn’t be more proud to work with him and his team on this great tour!”
Live Nation reports that more than 2 million tickets have already been sold for the tour’s next South American and Mexican dates, as well as 200,000 each for the dates in England and France. The stadium tour’s previous North American leg in 2022 brought in more than $148 million dollars, bringing the total impact of the tour to date to over $350 million.
The Weeknd recently hinted about changing his stage identity following his next release as a result of his contentious HBO show The Idol’s increased exposure to the TV industry. He acknowledged wanting to “kill” his musical character.
In a recent interview with W magazine, the Dawn FM hitmaker said, “I’m going through a cathartic route right now. “I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter at this point and time.” I’ll continue to release songs, perhaps as The Weeknd or as Abel. I still desire to murder The Weeknd, though. I will, too. Eventually. Undoubtedly, I’m attempting to lose that exterior and become new.
This month, The Weeknd will continue his After Hours Til Dawn Tour by performing in Brussels, Barcelona, Milan, Paris, and other cities. Additional dates will be announced soon. The singer of “Crew Love” will also tour Latin America this fall, stopping in Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and other cities before closing off on October 25 in Guadalajara, Mexico, at Estadio Akron.
