By using his own name again on Twitter, The Weeknd has hinted that his stage identity is finally coming to an end.
The Canadian singer updated his Twitter username to his real name, Abel Tesfaye, over the weekend after earlier this month teased the retirement of his fake moniker.
The name change was immediately noticed by fans, and some of them had opinions about what it might signal for The Weeknd’s musical career. Others even arranged a mock funeral for The Weeknd.
“@theweeknd for 12 years has watered us, nourished copiously with perfect and timeless productions,” said one tweet that The Weeknd forwarded to his over 17 million followers.
“The total value of the works of art is incalculable. Whatever the cause of his “disappearance” for Abel Tesfaye, I respect it, I’m behind him, but most of all, I hope it was a decision that he wanted to make.
Abel has been concentrating on his forthcoming HBO program The Idol, which will debut on HBO Max on June 4.
The Toronto megastar plays a self-help guru, club owner, and head of a contemporary cult in the irreverent and already contentious series. He begins dating a pop musician trying to reclaim her fame (played by Lily-Rose Depp).
The Idol Vol. 1, a new project by The Weeknd that will serve as a companion album to the program, was also made public.
The XO hitmaker is also slated to co-write, produce, and appear in a forthcoming film with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in an effort to further establish his name in Hollywood.
Abel Tesfaye made a suggestion earlier in May that he intended to “kill The Weeknd” and drop his stage name after the release of his subsequent album.
He told W magazine, “I’m getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter.” “I’ll continue to release songs, perhaps as Abel or The Weeknd. However, I still want to murder The Weeknd,” he declared. I will, too. Eventually. Undoubtedly, I’m attempting to lose that exterior and become new.
“The album I’m working on right now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd,” he continued elsewhere. I’ve got to take care of this. I’ve stated everything I can as The Weeknd.
