The classic De La Soul single “The Magic Number” has finally made it to streaming services as they start to promote the upcoming release of their entire discography.
The 1989 release of “The Magic Number” was one of the first singles from De La Soul’s landmark album 3 Feet High and Rising. The song was released after the New York trio announced earlier this month that their entire discography will be streamable at last, following years of legal wrangling.
De La Soul finally regained ownership of all of their master recordings, including 1989’s 3 Feet High & Rising and 1991’s De La Soul Is Dead, after settling their long-running legal dispute with Tommy Boy Records in 2021.
Reservoir Media purchased the De La Soul library together with the Tommy Boy Records catalog, and the latter has announced they will begin distributing the group’s first six albums on March 3.
“We can’t believe this day is finally here, and we are excited to be able to share our music with fans, old and new,” De La Soul said as part of the statement. “Golnar, Rell, Faith, and the Reservoir team have been great partners in this entire process. “We’re grateful that our relationship with them all has enabled this to happen.”
