T-Pain shared his thoughts on $ome $exy $ongs during a recent livestream, suggesting the album might consist of songs originally left off previous projects. He speculated that Drake recorded multiple tracks and later added PARTYNEXTDOOR to some of them to form a collaborative album.
“I feel like [Drake] recorded a bunch of songs,” T-Pain said. “And in order to keep [PARTYNEXTDOOR] around, I feel like you could take 10 or 15 of these songs, put a verse on them, and that’s our album.”
He clarified that he wasn’t criticizing the music itself. “I’m not saying that they’re bad,” he added. “These are just songs that didn’t make albums. Or PARTY came to him with an album and was like, ‘Hey Drake, could you put verses on these songs?’”
Regardless of its origin, $ome $exy $ongs has performed well, setting a record for the biggest R&B/soul album in Apple Music history based on first-day streams. The 21-track project, released on Valentine’s Day, features guest appearances from Yebba and Chino Pacas.
The album also includes a lyric where Drake acknowledges Melyssa Ford while insulting Joe Budden. On GIMME A HUG, he calls Ford a “legend from the 6” and refers to Budden in a negative light. Ford responded on The Joe Budden Podcast, saying she was still processing the mention but later updated her Instagram bio to include the phrase “legend from the 6.” Meanwhile, Budden seemed unbothered, saying, “I was happy.”
