Summer Walker has relaunched her “Buy Black Women’s Sh-t” initiative to support Black women-owned businesses in her hometown of Atlanta, coinciding with the anniversary of her Last Day Of Summer mixtape, first released in 2018.
On Sept. 22, while celebrating the anniversary of her debut mixtape, Walker went beyond just commemorating her first project. On the official last day of summer, the R&B singer reintroduced “Buy Black Women’s Sh-t,” an online marketplace encouraging fans to purchase self-care products from Black women entrepreneurs in Atlanta.
Among the highlighted businesses were The Lash Vault and Atlanta Curves, offering a variety of products catering to beauty, wellness, and community needs. LVRN Cares, the charitable arm of Walker’s Atlanta-based label, helped promote these local businesses spotlighted by the singer.
To boost engagement, fans received exclusive deals and discounts on products from the participating businesses. A directory of over 100 Black women-owned companies will be available on Walker’s website throughout the next year.
Walker’s journey to fame started with the release of Last Day Of Summer, which included her multi-platinum single “Girls Need Love.” The song’s remix featuring Drake propelled her into mainstream recognition. Since then, Walker has released two full-length albums and earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album, solidifying her place as a leading voice in the genre.
Her mission to uplift Black women entrepreneurs comes at a time when resources supporting them are under threat. Despite the fact that women founded 68% of Black-owned microbusinesses in the U.S., some initiatives, like the Fearless Fund—which aimed to assist Black women in business—have faced legal challenges. The fund was recently forced to halt grant allocations due to claims of discrimination.
In the face of these obstacles, Black women continue to excel in entrepreneurship. Walker’s initiative aims to ensure their businesses are known and supported, making a tangible impact in her community.
