Spotify is testing voice-based music requests for its AI DJ feature, allowing Premium users to fine-tune their listening sessions using verbal prompts. Announced Tuesday (May 13), the upgrade aims to make the DJ tool more interactive, as Spotify shared that engagement with the feature has “nearly doubled over the past year.”
The voice command update will roll out to over 60 markets where DJ is available and currently works in English only. Users can make tailored music requests by combining genre, artist, mood, or activity—such as asking for “high-energy tracks for a party” or “romantic music for date night.” Podcast and audiobook support is not yet included.
“Serving up suggestions using AI and insights from our global editorial experts, DJ helps you uncover new tracks, rediscover old favorites, and connect deeply with the music you love,” said Spotify. The feature builds on the platform’s efforts to offer more customized listening through tools like the AI Playlist generator, which responds to text prompts like “indie folk to give my brain a warm hug.”
While still in beta, the AI DJ can handle commands like “Play me some cry-in-the-car songs” or “Surprise me with indie tracks I’ve never heard before.” The development comes as competitors like YouTube Music introduce similar features, such as Ask Music, which uses AI to generate personalized radio stations.
Spotify’s voice-enabled DJ arrives alongside strong growth. In Q1 2025, Premium subscribers grew 12% year-over-year to 268 million—marking the highest first-quarter subscriber gain since 2020. Operating income reached a record €509 million ($535.6 million), with total revenue climbing 15% to €4.190 billion ($4.4 billion).
