Nicki Minaj recently joined Sexyy Red’s remix of the Tay Keith-produced single “Pound Town,” co-signing another up-and-coming female rapper.
Since its release in January, the raucous song has amassed over 15 million on-demand streams thanks to the #PoundTownChallenge, and that’s before Minaj added her star power. For the record, the St. Louis native has received praise from artists like Post Malone and Cardi B, and its newest edition “Pound Town 2” hopes to elevate her status even further.
“@nickiminaj Sexyy Red announced the new collaboration on Instagram on Friday (May 26), writing, “I preciate you so much for blessin’ my music this is major I’m so humble and appreciative.
For their record-breaking song “Princess Diana,” Nicki Minaj and up-and-comer Ice Spice collaborated earlier this year, making Minaj the rapper with the most No. 1 songs on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart.
The two have collaborated once more on the music for the upcoming Barbie movie, and the most recent trailer for the movie confirmed that it includes a sample of Aqua’s big single from 1997, “Barbie Girl.”
Before Ice, Minaj enlisted the help of up-and-coming female rappers Katie Got Bandz, Maliibu Miitch, BIA, and Akbar V for the remix of her 2022 hit “Super Freaky Girl.” She also enlisted JT of City Girls.
“I want to hear chicks rap once more. Shortly after the song was released last fall, the Queens native told JT in an interview for i-D, “Like, just rap. I purposefully wore cover-ups when I recorded my BET Cypher in the past. I was covered in sweat. Therefore, despite the fact that we were all having fun and being quite bizarre chicks on the song, you guys actually spit.
In a recent Twitter Q&A, Nicki Minaj stated that her upcoming release of her fifth studio album will be the “best thing that comes out of 2023” and that it would be praised as “genius.”
Her first release since 2018’s Queen, which had cameos from Eminem, Foxy Brown, Future, and others, will be the next album. It debuted with 185,000 album-equivalent units in its first week at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
