June is Black Music Month, a time to recognize the influence of Black artists across genres from jazz to hip-hop. In celebration, festivals around the country highlight Black musical traditions through performances, local vendors, and cultural programming. Here are seven events happening in seven states this month.
Durag Fest – Charlotte, North Carolina
Durag Fest returns to Charlotte the weekend of June 21–22 at Camp North End. This two-day event features music performances, panel discussions, and a vendor marketplace that supports local artists and entrepreneurs.
South Georgia Gospel Music Festival – Valdosta, Georgia
Taking place on June 8 in downtown Valdosta, this free festival offers gospel music and community engagement, with proceeds supporting local initiatives.
Capital Jazz Fest – Columbia, Maryland
From June 6–8, Columbia’s Merriweather Post Pavilion hosts Capital Jazz Fest, a longstanding event featuring jazz, soul, and R&B performances alongside food and craft vendors.
Black Music Fest – Houston, Delaware
Held at G & R Recreation Campground on June 7, Black Music Fest brings a mix of hip-hop, jazz, and soul performances to southern Delaware in a community-centered outdoor setting.
Miles Davis Jazz Festival – Alton, Illinois
On June 7, Post Commons in Alton honors jazz legend Miles Davis with performances by local musicians including Chris Jarden and Saman Swanson.
Levitt AMP Baton Rouge Music Series – Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Each Saturday through June 22, Scotlandville Plaza hosts free concerts celebrating blues and the legacy of Black musicians as part of the Levitt AMP series.
Saratoga Jazz Festival – Saratoga Springs, New York
Happening June 28–29 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, this jazz event includes performances from Gary Clark Jr., Trombone Shorty, and others, with food available on-site.
