Serena Williams Joins Toronto Tempo Ownership To Champion Women’s Sports In Canada.

Serena Williams, the retired tennis champion and businesswoman, has become a co-owner of the Toronto Tempo, the newest WNBA expansion team. The announcement was made on March 3 through a press release posted on the WNBA’s official website. Williams said she hopes to contribute to building a strong foundation for women’s sports in Canada.

“This moment is not just about basketball; it’s about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes,” she said in a statement shared by Sports Illustrated. Her involvement will include supporting the team’s visibility and creative input on branding, including the design of the team’s jerseys.

Williams is joining an ownership group led by Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures. Her ties to Canada go back to her early tennis career, as she made her professional debut in the country.

Teresa Resch, President of the Toronto Tempo, welcomed Williams’ participation and noted her contributions to both athletics and entrepreneurship. “Serena is a champion,” Resch said. “Her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible.”

The WNBA has yet to formally approve Williams’ ownership role. The Toronto Tempo is scheduled to begin competing in the league starting in 2026.
