Roblox has launched a new licensing system aimed at connecting creators with major intellectual property (IP) holders including Netflix, Lionsgate, Sega, and Kodansha.
Announced on Tuesday (July 15), the Roblox License Manager and Licenses catalog allows IP owners to register licenses, set custom terms, monitor usage, and collect revenue shares automatically. Creators can apply for licenses directly through the platform, simplifying what Roblox calls a previously complex process.
Seven franchises are available through the system at launch: Netflix’s Squid Game and Stranger Things, Lionsgate’s Twilight, Saw, Divergent, and Now You See Me, Sega’s Like A Dragon series, and Kodansha’s Blue Lock and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, with more properties to follow.
Roblox’s Chief Product Officer, Manuel Bronstein, said, “Until now, licensing IP was a complex and time-consuming process. To keep pace with development on Roblox, we recognized the need to provide creators with a flexible, simple-to-use licensing solution.”
In 2024, Roblox creators earned $923 million through the platform, with projected earnings expected to surpass $1 billion in 2025. Lionsgate, Sega, and Kodansha leaders all expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the Roblox creator community, describing the platform as a new avenue for connecting with fans and exploring immersive storytelling.
The licensing tool is Roblox’s latest move to expand content partnerships. In 2024, Roblox partnered with DistroKid to integrate music into its platform and rolled out new discovery tools like “What’s Playing” and music charts. The company also collaborated with Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music on various music features, including the Boombox player and ad-free radio stations powered by in-game items.
