At 63, retired U.S. Postal Service supervisor Janet Marsh has turned her retirement into an inspiring new chapter as the owner of Snow Cone City Mesquite, Texas’s only Black-owned, year-round snow cone shop. The venture was inspired by her late husband, Clarence, whose belief in her potential helped transform a simple idea into a thriving business.
The idea came during a routine drive through Mesquite, when Ms. Marsh noticed the absence of Black-owned snow cone shops in her community. After sharing her thoughts at home, her husband and family fully supported her vision. Together, they started with a small mobile trailer, which later evolved into a storefront that now serves as a welcoming space for families year-round.
Mr. Clarence played a major role in laying the foundation of Snow Cone City. Even as health issues limited his involvement, he continued to motivate Ms. Marsh, encouraging her to persevere through challenges, including moments when she considered quitting her business training program. With her family’s and community’s support, she completed her program and opened the shop, honoring his legacy through every step.
Today, Snow Cone City offers more than frozen treats. Guests can create their own snow cone combinations, enjoy signature beverages, and experience a warm, customer-centered atmosphere. “We don’t just serve snow cones,” Ms. Marsh says. “We create moments you’ll never forget.”
The shop now features branded merchandise and an online platform at SnowConeCityTexas.com, allowing customers beyond Mesquite to share in the experience. Located at 2110 North Galloway Avenue, Suite 110B, Mesquite, TX 75150, Snow Cone City represents community pride, reinvention, and the lasting spirit of Black entrepreneurship.
