Quavo Honored as Humanitarian of the Year for Combating Gun Violence
Quavo was recognized as Humanitarian of the Year at Variety’s eighth annual Hitmakers Brunch in Los Angeles for his efforts to combat gun violence. The Migos rapper was celebrated for his dedication to addressing the devastating effects of gun violence and for his advocacy in making a positive difference.
Reflecting on Takeoff’s Tragic Loss
During the event, Quavo took a moment to reflect on the painful loss of his nephew and fellow Migos group member, Takeoff, who was tragically killed in 2022. The loss deeply impacted Quavo, and he spoke about how it shaped his resolve to take action against gun violence. The tragedy became a turning point for the rapper, fueling his commitment to fighting for change.
Channeling Grief into Advocacy Through the Rocket Foundation
Quavo shared how channeling his grief into efforts to reduce gun violence gave him a renewed sense of purpose. His Rocket Foundation, established to support anti-violence initiatives, has become a central focus of his humanitarian work. The foundation serves as a platform for Quavo to advocate for gun violence prevention and to honor Takeoff’s memory by promoting peace.
“Losing my brother Takeoff was the worst moment in my life. I didn’t know where to go, where to turn, I didn’t know if I still wanted to make music,” he said
Greg Jackson, deputy director of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, presented Quavo with the Humanitarian of the Year award at Variety’s eighth annual Hitmakers Brunch in Los Angeles. Jackson praised Quavo’s unwavering commitment to tackling gun violence through his Rocket Foundation.
The Rocket Foundation: A Legacy in Memory of Takeoff
Founded in November 2022, the Rocket Foundation was established in memory of Takeoff, who tragically passed away that same month in Houston. The foundation focuses on supporting community-driven programs that address gun violence and has quickly become an influential force for change in the fight against violence.
Key Advocacy and Legislative Efforts
Quavo’s advocacy includes significant engagements, such as meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris at the Congressional Black Caucus legislative conference in September 2023. He also hosted the inaugural Rocket Foundation Summit on Gun Violence Prevention in Atlanta earlier that year. Quavo joined Harris at a rally supporting the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, one of the most comprehensive federal gun control laws in U.S. history, and played a role in the creation of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
Local and National Impact Through Grants and Partnerships
In March, the Rocket Foundation launched the Sparks Grants initiative, awarding $10,000 to 10 organizations in Atlanta dedicated to creating safer communities. Additionally, Quavo partnered with the Offender Alumni Association to host a music education workshop for at-risk youth as part of the Rocket Camp initiative.
The Rocket Foundation works with several key partners, including the Offender Alumni Association, H.O.P.E. Hustlers, Community Justice Action Fund, and LIVE FREE, to implement community-driven solutions aimed at reducing gun violence.
