Nicki Minaj Rejected Several 'Barbie' Songs Before Ice Spice Collab

The origins of Nicki Minaj’s most recent single, “Barbie World” with Ice Spice, have been revealed.

The “Starships” rapper revealed the details of how her partnership with the budding star came to be on the pink carpet at the Barbie movie’s global premiere on Sunday (July 9).

As she admitted to Entertainment Tonight, Nicki had her choice of the litter before falling in love with the winning track. “There were a couple songs that I didn’t love,” she said.

“I adored this ‘Barbie’ sample. I simply wanted a badass drum, therefore I was thrilled to receive the one they sent! And I got right on it,” she continued, referring to the RiotUSA-produced song, which is based on a sample of Aqua’s popular single “Barbie Girl” from 1997.

In addition, the rapper from Young Money described being a part of the Barbie soundtrack as a “very full-circle moment,” noting that she had “been saying ‘Barbie’ my whole career.”

Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj teamed up for their eagerly anticipated Barbie soundtrack collaboration last month. The song premiered at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Spice her fourth top 10 success and giving Nicki her 23rd top 10 hit.

The couple can be seen getting all dolled up in pink in the music video, traveling about town together, and exchanging bars about how similar they are to the well-known dressed.

And I’m a badass like Barbie.” Although I’m a doll, I still want to party. I feel like I’m about to bend in a pink ‘Vette. I pull in a Ken, Jazzie, Stacie, and Nicki because I’m a 10, and The Barbies are all lovely. We’re not playing tag, and all the Barbies are bad It girls, they rap.

The New York MCs have previously embraced their inner pink princess. Previously, they collaborated on a remix of Spice’s song Like..? “Princess Diana,” an EP cut.

They appeared to be dressed fully in pink as they engaged in intimate physical contact in the bedroom.

Prior to its release, “Barbie World” was the subject of some controversy when Compton rapper Jason Martin (also known as Problem) claimed Nicki Minaj left off his writing credit on the song.
