Microsoft Urges Windows 10 Users to Recycle Old PCs as Support Deadline Nears.

Microsoft has started emailing Windows 10 users to remind them that support for the operating system will end on October 14, 2025. The message warns that after this date, users will no longer receive free updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

The email also includes a link to upgrade to Windows 11. However, many PCs made before 2018 do not meet the system requirements for Windows 11, which include the TPM 2.0 security module. In 2023, a nonprofit group estimated that up to 1 billion devices could still be running Windows 10 by the time support ends.

Microsoft encourages users to either upgrade or purchase a new Windows 11 device. It also suggests recycling or trading in old machines, although many may have little to no trade-in value.

Windows 10 currently holds 58% of the global desktop PC market, while Windows 11 has reached 38%, according to Statcounter.

For those choosing to stay on Windows 10, Microsoft advises backing up files with OneDrive. Users can also pay $30 to receive extended security updates for one additional year.
