Meta Adjusts 'AI Info' Label Placement To Post Menus For AI-Edited Content.

Meta is reducing the prominence of its “AI Info” labels on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Starting next week, posts that have been edited or modified using AI tools will have the label accessible via the post’s menu, according to an updated blog post by the company on Thursday. This change means the labels will be less visible than before.

However, Meta clarified that this updated policy only affects content that has been edited with AI tools. For content fully generated by AI, the “AI Info” label will still appear below the username, indicating whether the media was tagged due to industry signals or self-disclosure.

After the update is implemented, users can check if content was modified using AI by tapping the menu button in the top right of a post and selecting “AI Info.”

Meta says this change is aimed at better representing the level of AI involved in content creation. Monika Bickert, Meta’s Vice President of Content Policy, stated that the company has worked with others in the industry to refine the labeling process, ensuring it aligns more closely with user expectations.

Meta first introduced the “AI Info” tag in July, following criticism of the earlier “Made with AI” label for being unclear. The labeling is now determined by signals from the AI tool used to alter the content, which can range from minor edits like photo retouching to generating completely new material, as explained in the “AI Info” dialog.

Despite these efforts, Meta acknowledges that the labeling may still be imperfect, as not all AI-generated media contains the necessary metadata for identification.
