Lizzo Finally Approved Use Of The Phrase "100% That Bitch" As A Trademark

Lizzo, who made the phrase a meme with her song “Truth Hurts” in 2017, has finally been given permission to trademark “100% that bitch.”

The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled “100% that bitch” was definitely connected to the famous singer and could be used officially for clothing, according to a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) file obtained by PEOPLE on Thursday (February 2).

“Considering the entirety of the record, we find that most consumers would perceive 100% THAT Bitch used on the goods in the application as associated with Lizzo rather than as a commonplace expression,” the board ruled.

After first rejecting Lizzo’s eight times, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the USPTO has now reversed course.

Fans “may identify” the phrase with Lizzo, according to the TTAB’s argument when rejecting the application, but this “does not enable the applicant as a singer-songwriter to acquire for itself exclusive use of the phrase.”
