Lil Wayne’s son, Novi, claims the New Orleans rap legend was heavily involved in writing for Drake early in his career. In an interview with TrillMarty on YouTube, Novi stated, “My dad wrote most of [Drake’s] shit. On God. Like, if it wasn’t for my pops, there wouldn’t be no Drake.” He added, “There probably would be a Drake, but he wouldn’t be where he’s at, though.”
Novi was clear that his comments weren’t meant to disrespect Drake, saying, “He hard.” He did not name specific songs that Lil Wayne may have written, and neither artist has responded to the claims.
Drake has long credited Lil Wayne for his early success, especially during their time at Young Money. In 2023, Drake called Wayne “the most supportive boss in the game” and has often referred to him as a mentor and idol. He was also present at Wayne’s 39th birthday celebration in 2021, delivering a toast and expressing his appreciation.
Wayne has also shown support for Drake over the years. In a 2024 podcast interview, he shared that public criticism of Drake might be rooted in colorism, saying, “He red, he light-skinned… that’s just American history.”
Despite the new claims, both artists have maintained a strong public relationship built over more than a decade.
