In the latest “Critical Breakdown” segment on ‘Inside The Maze’, host Mz Mophilla sits down with the founders of Side Presents, Marlene and T. Lou, to discuss their mission and impact on Boston’s creative landscape. As co-founders of this vibrant production agency, they’re known for curating events that celebrate Black and Latinx art, always with an inclusive, fun, and “wholesome” approach.
Marlene and T. Lou’s journey together began serendipitously in 2015 when they discovered they shared the same birthday—November 14th. Both Scorpios, they instantly connected, recognizing a shared passion for creative expression and community-building. With Marlene’s roots in event planning and T. Lou’s background in singing and creative direction from her studies at Berkeley, they bring a dynamic mix of skills that set Side Presents apart in Boston’s event scene.
Through Side Presents, Marlene and T. Lou aim to create intimate, aesthetically rich spaces that break from Boston’s typical event landscape. Their standout gatherings have become popular touchpoints in the community, including “Estrog,” an annual empowerment event celebrating community achievements, and “Sketch Sesh,” a weekly event held every Tuesday at Seaport. These gatherings foster connection and recognition for artists, prioritizing an experience that feels both personal and impactful.
With their sights set on expansion, the founders are working to establish a brick-and-mortar venue in Mattapan by the end of 2025. This upcoming 1,500-1,700 square-foot location, supported by a partnership with BVM Housing Partners, will include an outdoor space and provide a dedicated hub for Side Presents’ events and gatherings. Currently, they are actively fundraising for this project, which they hope will become a cornerstone of Boston’s creative community.
As Marlene and T. Lou explain, Side Presents works at the intersection of corporate and artistic events, always with a strong focus on community building. Their approach prioritizes purpose, ensuring each event leaves a lasting impact on attendees while helping to foster a diverse, supportive creative ecosystem in Boston.
