Fans at the 2023 Roots Picnic were shocked when Black Thought inserted a verse to Usher’s 2004 hit song “Throwback” during the latter’s main performance.
On Sunday night, June 4, Ursh, a last-minute replacement for Diddy after he withdrew as the headliner in late May, ended the annual three-day event.
Usher had another surprise in store for the audience as he joined Black Thought for a reworked version of the Confessions cut as he tore through his classics including “Burn,” “Yeah,” and “U Don’t Have to Call” and brought out special guests like Jazmine Sullivan and Eve.
He rhymes, “One Friday night session, a minor indiscretion/Almost had me like with Usher pulling out a true confession,” on the new verse.
As the Confessions album approaches its 20th anniversary, fans have been anticipating for a follow-up, but Usher had some disappointing news for them in a recent interview. Atlanta native topping by The Shade Room in May disclosed that there won’t actually be a Confessions 2.
The notion of a follow-up to the ground-breaking record was dismissed by him as “just a rumor, at this point.” However, who knows? We’ll find out when we arrive.
We still have time, he continued. There is room and time to consider novel ideas. However, the 20-year-old was a really smart one. We commemorate 20 years of an album for each producer, writer, and creative who contributed in any way. The majority of people, after all, don’t even have professions that last that long. To actually have an album that has endured the test of time? I’m grateful to my fans for their ongoing support of the music.
Usher has been riding the success of Confessions for a while, taking his show to Las Vegas for a residency, where he has welcomed a decent number of famous people since it started in February 2022.
Back in March, the singer interrupted his concert to give Queen Latifah some flowers, figuratively speaking. On March 18, the New Jersey rap star celebrated her 53rd birthday and went to see Usher perform.
As seen in a video released on his Instagram Stories, Usher entered the crowd and gave Latifah a hug as a birthday gift in front of thousands of admirers.
The singer of Native Tongues was seen carrying a bouquet of red roses while her 1993 single “U.N.I.T.Y.” played over the venue’s speakers. Latifah thanked the crowd for their cordial greeting as they applauded the embrace.
