According to Swizz Beatz, his late friend and partner DMX sent up-and-coming star Scar Lip his way to work with him and offer mentoring.
The Ruff Ryders hitmaker revealed in an interview with Audacy’s Hip-Hop Made that DMX’s spirit inspired him to collaborate with Scar Lip because the Yonkers legend’s fiancée Desiree Lindstrom had done so.
“I honestly feel like DMX sent Scap Lip my way because she’s too much of his energy,” he said. “Like I’ve never seen an artist with what I know DMX has just naturally. Yes, they are two separate artists working at two different levels. I’m not, however, referring to it. I’m referring to this area.
“You know, like, Dog’s been through a lot, and that sister’s gone through a lot, too. That sister is amazing and has a tremendous heart, just like X had a great heart, you know, when you sit with her.
You comprehend what I’m saying? Like, she merely represents the underprivileged, just as X did. And for her to still be smiling after going through all of those different things. I think, “Man, she’s got to win.”
When Swizz enlisted Scar Lip for his Hip Hop 50: Vol. 2 EP in April, the 22-year-old rapped with New York heavyweights Jadakiss and Benny The Butcher on the single “Take ‘Em Out.”
This month, Snoop Dogg joined Scar Lip in endorsing the remix of “This Is New York,” her breakout song, for “This Is Cali.”
The partnership comes after fellow Bronx native Cardi B praised Scar Lip, leaving the rising artist in tears as she pursues career growth.
Swizz stated that DMX’s spirit was always with him, not just at this particular moment. During a recent appearance with The Breakfast Club, he discussed the late rap legend visiting him in a vivid dream.
Man, it doesn’t even feel like he’s gone, according to Swizz. It simply seems as though he is away, relaxing. When the anniversary finally arrives, his fiancée or son will be on the phone with me, and I’ll be like, “Whoa.”
“Or it will hit me while I watch a movie or go through photographs on my phone. However, the fact that he approached me makes me feel better about it.
“I saw him in my dream,” he added. He approached me. Additionally, this went by really quickly. He also informed me that he was good. He hasn’t come to see you; what are you talking about, I’m the one who says. I noticed him. I could smell him, I could feel him, but I couldn’t hear him speak.
