Google Wallet users can now add their passports to the app and scan them at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints, enhancing convenience for domestic travelers.
Initially announced as a beta in September, the feature is now live for specific airports, according to Engadget. However, it only applies to US domestic flights and cannot yet be used for international travel. Travelers must still carry physical IDs as a backup.
To activate the feature, users can open Google Wallet, choose the “create an ID pass with your US passport” option, and follow the steps to scan their passport’s security chip and take a selfie video for verification. Google notes the technology is in its early stages.
Digital IDs have seen broader adoption in the US, with 27 states and Puerto Rico supporting them in Google or Apple Wallets. Major airports, including JFK, LAX, and SFO, already accept digital IDs for TSA screenings.
