Google is introducing two new tools to make account recovery easier when users lose access to their accounts. The update allows recovery through either a phone number or trusted friends and family who also have Google accounts.
Losing a phone or having it stolen can lead to the added stress of losing access to personal data. To simplify recovery, Google has launched two new features. The first, called Sign in with Mobile Number, lets users find linked Google accounts using their phone number and sign in without a password. By entering the screen passcode from their last Android device, users can securely regain access. The feature is rolling out gradually, though Google hasn’t confirmed whether activation will be automatic or manual.
The second feature introduces Recovery Contacts, allowing trusted friends or family members to assist in account recovery. If a user forgets their password or loses a device with stored passkeys, they can rely on these contacts after completing the standard recovery steps. Google says the contacts can “help verify your identity, providing a simple and secure way to regain access.”
Users must manually add Recovery Contacts to their Google account before losing access for the feature to work.
To enable the new Recovery Contacts feature, head to your Google Account settings and select Security & sign-in. Under the How you sign in to Google section, find Recovery contacts, then select Add recovery contact and enter your trusted person’s email address.
It’s recommended to inform the person beforehand so they’re prepared for the request. After pressing Send request, a pop-up will appear on your chosen contact’s device, showing your name, email address, and profile photo. They’ll then have seven days to accept the request before it expires.
