In an enlightening new episode of ThaPurpleShell Podcast, GoldMouf Famgoon sat down to discuss his incredible journey from a teenage millionaire to serving 17 years in prison, and how he’s turned his life around through music, business, and community outreach.
GoldMouf’s rise in the music industry began with a significant signing to Jeezy’s label early in his career. He credits the experience with teaching him valuable lessons about the music business, his public image, and the realities of the industry. Before facing legal trouble,GoldMouf, then known as “Li Mill,” was a teenage millionaire with a collection of cars and properties. His nickname “GoldMouf” came from his smooth-talking style and, of course, his iconic gold teeth.
After being sentenced to 35 years, GoldMouf spent 17 years in prison. Despite the hardships, he managed to make the most of his time behind bars. He earned a bachelor’s degree, became a certified paralegal, and wrote two books, one of which became an urban bestseller with over 100,000 copies sold. He also faced an additional murder charge near the end of his sentence, but he views his time in prison as life-saving, allowing him to mature and acquire valuable life skills.
As he neared his release, he admits that he struggled with anxiety about reentering society after being away for so long.
Now, GoldMouf is back in the spotlight, promoting his new single “Trapper of the Year” featuring Bigger Ranking and Trey Lawson. The track is already receiving significant airplay, with over 100 radio stations spinning it, and it’s climbing the charts.
In addition to his music career, GoldMouf has launched his own podcast, Design On My Shoe, where he interviews celebrities and artists while giving them expensive designer shoes (ranging from $1,200 to $2,400). He has already hosted notable guests like Saucy Santana and Pap Chanel.
A core part of his life philosophy is giving back to his community. He doesn’t just give for the recognition; his philanthropic work is something he prefers to keep private. GoldMouf has helped launch the careers of several artists behind the scenes and actively engages in charity work, drawing a strong connection between his Muslim faith and his desire to support others.
In the interview, GoldMouf redefines the concept of “trapping.” While the term is often associated with illegal activity, he emphasizes that “trapping” can mean any legitimate hustle or way of earning income. He encourages entrepreneurship and stresses the importance of working hard, regardless of the field. For him, any honest job that brings in money is worthy of respect.
