In his interview on Club Shay Shay, Gillie Da Kid discussed his basketball skills, debated rapper-hoopers, and shared insights into his past, all while keeping his signature humor and competitive energy.
Ranking the Best Rapper-Hoopers
Shannon Sharpe asked Gillie to rank the best rappers who can hoop, listing names like Lil Durk, J. Cole, Chris Brown, 2 Chainz, Master P, Dave East, Cam’ron, and Mase. While Dave East and Chris Brown were strong contenders, Gillie crowned NLE Choppa as the best. He recalled playing against Choppa in a celebrity game, where both matched each other bucket for bucket, scoring 27 points each.
Gillie acknowledged Master P’s near-NBA career but joked that the rap mogul’s “OG hips” weren’t what they used to be. When Sharpe pressed him on a hypothetical one-on-one match against Choppa, Gillie confidently declared he’d win, referencing victories over him in the Big 3 celebrity games.
Why Gillie Isn’t in the NBA Celebrity Game
Sharpe questioned why Gillie hasn’t played in the NBA Celebrity Game, and Gillie claimed it was because it would be an “easy MVP” for him. He dismissed the game as “politics,” arguing that most participants aren’t real hoopers but just have the right connections.
Calling Out Jamal Crawford & Bronny James
Gillie then set his sights on former NBA star Jamal Crawford, challenging him to a one-on-one. He acknowledged Crawford’s impressive Sixth Man of the Year awards but joked that Crawford had “639,000 miles on his knees.” He also playfully called out Bronny James, saying that while the young player had talent, he was “too little” to handle him.
Sharpe laughed off Gillie’s confidence, predicting a 15-2 loss against Bronny. Gillie, however, insisted no one had ever held him to just two points and emphasized his own wingspan advantage.
Duckin’ Rich Paul & The Big 3 Debate
Sharpe brought up Rich Paul challenging Gillie to a three-point contest, to which Gillie humorously admitted he let Rich slide because they had business dealings in progress. When asked if he’d play in Ice Cube’s Big 3 league, Gillie said he would but claimed he wasn’t allowed because his shooting was too dominant. He took shots at former NBA players Mario Chalmers and Jeff Teague, saying they played full Big 3 seasons but didn’t match his shooting ability.
His College Basketball Career & What Went Wrong
Toward the end, Sharpe asked about Gillie’s college basketball scholarship and why it didn’t pan out. Gillie admitted that he was young and reckless, getting involved in an armed robbery situation that led to him being kicked out of college. He paid tribute to his late friend Allan Bunch, who was involved in the incident, and reflected on how that moment led him to focus on rap.
