From Quarantine Radio to Streaming's Boom: Did Tory Lanez Lay the Groundwork?

Tory Lanez has claimed credit for shaping the current streaming culture that has elevated unknown talents and revitalized established stars. From prison on Thursday (January 16), Lanez shared a clip from his 2020 Quarantine Radio on Instagram, writing: “I crawled so the streaming community could walk [happy tears emojis] #QuarantineRadio.”

Quarantine Radio launched in March 2020 during the pandemic, quickly gaining traction with appearances from stars like Drake, who helped Lanez break an Instagram Live record with over 237,000 viewers. The success led to partnerships like the Tory Lanez Dream City Fund, which provided meals and diapers to families impacted by COVID-19.

“It’s very important for any artist to give back because at some point you were regular too,” Lanez said at the time. However, his career took a dramatic turn months later following the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, for which he is now serving a 10-year sentence.

Last week, Megan was granted a five-year restraining order against Lanez, prohibiting him from any harassment until 2030. Despite legal troubles, Lanez continues to reflect on his impact during quarantine, marking Quarantine Radio as a pivotal moment in streaming history.
