Following an unexpected historic victory by the national Moroccan soccer team, French Montana organized an on-the-spot World Cup rally in New York City.
Morocco became the first African nation and the first Arab-speaking nation to ever reach the World Cup semifinals on Saturday (December 10), defeating Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to do so.
French Montana, who was born and bred in Casablanca, celebrated the breakthrough victory on Instagram right away with images of the Moroccan national team and jokes making fun of Portugal.
“LEGENDARY ON ANOTHER LEVELLLLLL HAMDULILLAH [flame emoji],” he captioned the post. “FIRST AFRICAN TEAM TO EVER MAKE THE SEMI-FINALS!! [Moroccan flag emoji] Ronaldo u had your time g … it’s Morocco time lol”
The “Yes I Do” rapper added a slide urging followers to meet him on 47th Street in Times Square after sharing a number of other joyous videos to his Instagram Stories, including what appeared to be in-the-moment reactions in Morocco.
Thousands of people reportedly joined French as he waved his flag and chanted in unison with their cheers. This is according to TMZ.
The rapper kept the celebration going all night long, even persuading Bobby Shmurda to join in by giving him a soccer jersey from Morocco.
There were other street celebrations in honor of the historic national team besides French Montana’s. According to CNN, followers on social media have captured images of comparable celebrations in Paris, London, and Rabat, the capital of Morocco.
On December 14, the Atlas Lions’ semifinal matchup will be against France.
Despite receiving widespread acclaim for his contribution to the New York hip-hop industry, French Montana has kept his connections to Africa strong. He received the 2022 Innovator Award in October for his continued efforts to enhance the healthcare sector in Uganda at the Pencils of Promise Gala.
In addition to sponsoring the Budondo Suubi “Hope” Health Center, the region’s major facility for providing treatment for new and expecting women as well as their newborns, French was recognized at the gala for her role in raising more than $226 million for healthcare in Uganda.
French Montana shared pictures of himself at the ceremony carrying his most recent piece of silverware as he posted messages about receiving the honor on his Instagram page.
“MAKING MORE HISTORY FOR MY PEOPLE!” he wrote. “Thank you @pencilsofpromise for honoring me with the Innovator Award at last night’s gala. Healthcare and education are fundamental parts of our human rights and should be accessible across the globe.
“I’m grateful for POP acknowledging my work in maternal healthcare in Africa. “PoP is doing groundbreaking work globally to keep kids in school and make sure they have a safe environment to learn.”
