Fetty Wap is officially a free man after being released from prison nearly a year early. The New Jersey rapper, known for hits like “Trap Queen,” “679,” and “My Way,” was transferred from a federal prison in Minnesota to home confinement in Philadelphia on Wednesday January 7, according to Billboard and TMZ.
Fetty, born Willie Maxwell II, was sentenced to six years in May 2023 on federal drug charges, with his original release date set for December 2026.
“I want to thank my family, friends, and fans for the love, prayers, and continued support, it truly means everything to me,” Fetty said in a statement. “Right now, my focus is on giving back through my community initiatives and foundation, supporting at-risk young children by expanding access to education, early tech skills, and vision care for young kids and students so they can show up as their best selves. I’m committed to moving forward with purpose and making a meaningful impact where it matters most.”
Following his release, the 34-year-old was welcomed at 300 Entertainment’s New York City office, where he was greeted warmly by his team.
Fetty Wap was arrested in October 2021 at Rolling Loud New York, accused of transporting over 100 kilograms of cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin from California for distribution across Long Island and New Jersey. He initially pleaded not guilty and was released on a $500,000 bond while awaiting trial. His bond was later revoked in August 2022 after an alleged threat made over FaceTime violated release conditions.
Despite his legal issues, Fetty has remained active in music. He released his third album, King Zoo, in late 2023 while in prison and recently collaborated with Freebandz rapper Doe Boy on “Lil Sexy.” Additionally, his 2015 song “Again” went viral on TikTok last year, topping the TikTok Billboard Top 50 and re-entering the Hot 100 at number 41.
