At the Black Music Collective event, where Lil Wayne was recognized for his accomplishments earlier this week, Drake made another attempt at the Grammys.
The dinner, which took place on Thursday, February 2, honored Weezy, Dr. Dre, and Missy Elliott for receiving the Global Impact Award. Drizzy submitted a pre-recorded video that lauded his “brother” Lil Wayne while also throwing in a few jabs at the Recording Academy even though he wasn’t present.
“Good evening, Grammys. Well, I haven’t gotten to say that since 2016. My name is Drake and I’m here tonight on behalf of the Black Music Collective,” Drake said as he took off his glasses and winked at the camera.
He went on to say in his subsequent video that he was giving pop musician Ed Sheeran the Global Impact Award until someone off-camera informed him that Lil Wayne actually received it.
It was a clear jab at the Grammys’ inconsistent prize winners throughout the years, with Macklemore’s 2014 victory over JAY-Z, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake himself for Best Rap Album being the most noteworthy.
“Lil Wayne, oh right, makes sense, yeah, sorry Lil Wayne, my brother, that’s a lot better … I love you so much,” Drake said. “I know I probably get annoying with saying how much you mean to me and my family, but I think I speak on behalf of everybody when I say that our careers, our cadences, our melodies, maybe our face tats or our outfits or our decisions in general would not have been the same without your natural gift to just be yourself.”
