With Roots Picnic 2025 just days away, organizers have confirmed a major change to the lineup. D’Angelo, who was scheduled to headline on Saturday, May 31, has pulled out due to medical advice following earlier surgery.
In a statement shared via the festival’s Instagram on May 23, the singer explained that his doctors warned performing could worsen his condition. “It is nearly impossible to express how disappointed I am not to be able to play with my brothers the Roots,” he wrote. He also thanked fans for their continued support.
Maxwell has been named as D’Angelo’s replacement on the main stage. The switch ensures that the annual Philadelphia festival will still offer a strong R&B presence for attendees.
Though unable to perform, D’Angelo hinted that he’s working on new music. “I’m currently in the lab and I can’t wait to serve up what’s in the pot,” he added in his closing note.
