Since his 2021 homophobic incident, DaBaby has experienced a significant decline in sales and fame, but his new track “Shake Sumn” might finally be turning things around.
The Charlie Heat-produced song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 92 in its first week last week, and this week it has climbed a whopping 18 ranks to No. 74, according to a report from That Grape Juice on Wednesday (May 24). The North Carolina rapper has now reached his greatest chart position since the summer of 2021, when “Red Light Green Light” reached a peak of No. 50.
The song was made available on May 5 as a part of the Call Da Fireman EP by DaBaby. The song has been gaining popularity on TikTok, which most likely contributed to its current chart success.
On the Rolling Loud Miami stage in July 2021, DaBaby made news by making divisive choices. Baby’s outburst during his performance caused the boisterous crowd to fire their cigarettes in the air, but many fans were offended by the homophobic digression.
He continued, “Put your cellphone lighter up if you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of those deadly sexually transmitted diseases, that’ll make you die in two to three weeks.”
“Ladies, hold your cellphone light in the air if your pussy smells like water. Guys, turn off your cellphone if you’re not sucking dick in the parking lot.
After the performance, he had the chance to retract his remarks, but instead chose to stick with them, which only made the situation worse. The multi-platinum rapper, however, stated that if he had the chance to do it over again, he would have handled the issue differently during an interview on LeBron James’ series The Shop earlier this month.
The “Ball If I Want To” rapper responded, “Absolutely, Absolutely,” when asked by host Maverick Carter if he would alter his answer to what happened. That was something I actually said, you get what I mean? Because I’m this kind of person, I would have apologized recently, if not even recently. I mean, I’m going to fight for my character and my ideals with everything I’ve got. I don’t have a bad side. In that, I’m steadfast.
“Like when that sh*t happened bro, I had my own meal with Burger King,” he continued. I like seeing a lot of the things my classmates are doing these days. I find that to be hilarious. I was lucky and happy to be able to accomplish these things in my first year as a mainstream musician.
“I had a Burger King lunch. Because I had so much going on, buddy, when I shot the commercial, I still had the behind-the-scenes footage. You really have no idea. I mean, I had a lot going on, you understand? But in the end, if you get caught up in the bad stuff, we’re so used to rolling with the punches on social media, in whatever situation we find ourselves, that we know we need to adjust. We are aware that we must adapt no matter where we are, what we are doing, or the game we are playing. And those people will succeed.
