Ten years ago, Carlton Mackey searched for positive images of Black men online and found none under the hashtag #BlackMenSmile. Seeing an opportunity to change the narrative, he launched a movement to highlight Black men’s joy and resilience.
What began as a hashtag grew into a broader initiative. Black Men Smile now has over 100,000 Instagram followers and has expanded into apparel, featuring messages like “Black Joy is Revolutionary.” The platform also includes two YouTube series: Je’s Journal, which explores fatherhood and relationships, and Greenhouse Conversations, which focuses on Black mental health and spirituality.
In 2024, Black Men Smile collaborated with Target for its Black History Month collection, marking a milestone for the brand. However, Mackey has since distanced himself from the retailer after it announced plans to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. He has expressed concern over corporations reducing DEI commitments and stated that he would reconsider similar partnerships in the future.
Under the new Trump administration, Mackey and his team see their work as even more necessary. With recent policy changes affecting DEI efforts and racial justice initiatives, Black Men Smile continues to provide a space for positive representation and community discussions. Through social media engagement, storytelling, and events, Mackey and his team remain committed to uplifting Black voices and fostering a sense of unity.
