Boston Mourns the Loss of Leroy “Bum” Peeples, Community Leader and Anti-Violence Advocate.

Boston is mourning the loss of Leroy “Bum” Peeples Jr., a respected figure in community outreach and anti-violence initiatives, whose passing has left a profound impact on the city. As the Director of SOAR Boston and founder of the Prevention, Intervention, and Mediation Project, Peeples dedicated his life to fostering peace and guiding young people in neighborhoods like Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan.

Mayor Michelle Wu released a statement honoring Peeples’ legacy:

“The City of Boston shares our deepest condolences and love with Kim, Donte, Jace, Leroy III, Leroy IV, and all the loved ones of Mattapan’s own Leroy Peeples Jr. mourning this profound loss. Leroy was a pillar of Boston’s anti-violence efforts… His unwavering commitment to speaking the truth, community, inspiring young people, and selfless acts of service left an indelible mark on our city.”

Peeples’ dedication extended beyond his official roles. He was also a coach for the Dorchester Eagles and played a key role in the Boston Public Schools’ Division of Student Support, mentoring countless young people. His impact was felt deeply in both grassroots activism and cultural spaces—he even appeared as himself in the 2018 documentary This Ain’t Normal, which explored urban youth and gang culture in Boston.

Albie Cheddar, founder of Cheddar Vault and co-owner of Firebrand Cannabis, paid tribute to Peeples on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt message alongside a clip from one of his interviews.

“I would sit in Bum’s office at The Source Magazine, and we would talk for hours about business, Hip-Hop, and the streets of Boston,” Cheddar wrote. “He was a true advocate for our community.”

Cheddar highlighted Peeples’ unwavering commitment to uplifting the city and their close relationship, recalling their discussions about future plans just weeks before his passing.

“My brother Bum’s energy and passion can never be replaced,” Cheddar added. “The work that he did will truly be missed. Rest in Peace Leroy Peeples Jr AKA Bum.”

Peeples’ lasting legacy of love, leadership and dedication is defined by his tireless efforts to create safer communities. As Boston grieves the loss of one of its most dedicated advocates, plans for memorial services are expected to be announced soon. Peeples’ lifelong work in mentorship, activism, and violence prevention will continue to inspire those who carry on his mission.
