Nigerian-American architect and entrepreneur Olatokunbo “Ola” Morin-Muhammed has introduced Wasimi Villas, a new eco-luxury development located on the shores of Lake Muhazi in Rwanda. The villas are part of a long-term vision that combines sustainable design, cultural intention, and a focus on community. Just one hour outside Kigali, the lakefront retreat is designed for diaspora and global investors seeking meaningful ownership in East Africa.
With over 25 years in architecture and urban planning, Morin-Muhammed purchased the land in 2021 with the goal of creating Rwanda’s first fully sustainable luxury resort community. The name Wasimi, from the Yoruba word meaning “come and rest,” reflects her goal to build spaces that center peace, reflection, and purpose.
Why Rwanda, Why Now
Rwanda has become one of Africa’s top destinations for relocation, tourism, and investment. It was named the #1 safest country in Africa and saw a 25% rise in international tourism in 2024. The eco-tourism sector is growing fast, but there remains limited supply of sustainable, upscale housing. Located near trails, boutique lodges, and calm waters, Lake Muhazi is now drawing attention as a developing hub. Wasimi Villas is the first project of its kind to bring eco-luxury to this part of Rwanda.
Built with Rammed Earth and Sustainable Design
The villas will be built using rammed earth construction in collaboration with Rammteck, a sustainable architecture firm based in South Africa. The technique is known for its durability, natural insulation, and visual harmony with the land. Each villa will be crafted for long-term use and environmental responsibility.
The project’s global marketing is led by entrepreneur Dawn Dickson, who says: “We’re not just selling homes, we’re creating generational assets in Africa.”
