Black Sunday, According To Cypress Hill, Was Recorded While They Were High On Mushrooms

With the anniversary of their sophomore album, Black Sunday, approaching, Cypress Hill, who has been active in the hip-hop scene for more than 30 years, has been reflecting on the process of recording the album.

Unsurprisingly, the group consumed plenty of natural substances throughout the process.

If B-Real remembers the steps he took to arrange the songs, he told HipHopDX, “With that one, not really,” We consumed mushrooms. ‘We Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That’ was the last song we performed, or at least it was at the time. Everything before had been recorded. For approximately a month or so, Muggs and I were in New York; the last two weeks, we brought Sen Dog out to fill in the gaps.

And, as you know, we caught up with everything, he continued. Someone handed us an excess of mushrooms. And we fucked them up. We had a reputation for doing that.

In fact, B-Real teamed up with fellow Hip Hop veteran Berner in 2020 to fully verticalize the Dr. Greenthumb brand, demonstrating how proudly 420- and other psychedelic-friendly Cypress Hill is.

He told DX exclusively at the time that “the conversation shifted in terms of cannabis in the sense that cannabis people can come out of the underground and become legitimate business people.” “Some were very reluctant, and some are still reluctant, so I believe that’s why the black market will always exist because there will always be some reluctance from those involved in the cannabis industry.”

The objective has always been to promote legalization and any enterprises that result from it, he stated. Since Dr. Greenthumb is a vertical company — all independent but vertical — the intention was obviously not to make a pun. Rather, the objective was always to try to enter the so-called “white market,” or the legal market.

“Obviously, there were many obstacles to overcome before the brand was established, and eventually, it led to the creation of a retail location in addition to items. The setbacks and injuries we sustained while attempting to achieve that helped us learn more about the industry and what we had to do to fully enter and become one of these reputable businesses. And it’s challenging. Definitely not simple. It requires a lot. However, brand development is of utmost significance.

“Despite how challenging it was, we were able to build a brand that people know, love, and trust, and they go above and beyond for us. We have therefore been fortunate. Some more than others, but I firmly believe that the industry will continue to grow and prosper. Particularly once all of this nonsense is through,” he said.
