Black-Owned Pharmacies Across the U.S. Provide Care and Community Support.

In towns and cities across the United States, Black-owned pharmacies are offering more than prescriptions—they are supporting the health and identity of their communities. These pharmacies provide culturally aware care in neighborhoods often overlooked by larger chains. However, competition from large corporations makes it harder for them to thrive. Supporting these businesses strengthens both community health and local economies. BLACK ENTERPRISE highlights eight Black-owned pharmacies making an impact.

GreaterHealth Pharmacy & Wellness — Missouri
In St. Louis, GreaterHealth Pharmacy & Wellness, founded by CEO Marcus Howard in 2023, addresses gaps in healthcare access. The locally-rooted pharmacy offers counseling services and works to reduce “pharmacy deserts,” ensuring inclusive care for underserved populations.

HOPE Pharmacy — Virginia
Founded by Dr. Shantelle Brown in 2019, HOPE Pharmacy in Richmond provides vaccines, education, and tailored care for the community. Its focus on personalized service sets it apart from larger pharmacy chains.

Premier Pharmacy & Wellness Center — North Carolina
Since 2015, Dr. Martez Prince’s Premier Pharmacy & Wellness Center has combined independent pharmacy services with a wellness clinic. The center provides healthcare access and solutions under one roof, addressing the needs of its local community.

Del-Kar Pharmacy — Illinois
A fixture in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood since 1960, Del-Kar Pharmacy is a family-owned business passed through generations. It has maintained consistent operations, ensuring reliable access to medicine despite challenges in pharmacy availability.

Othello Station Pharmacy — Washington
Opened in Seattle’s Othello neighborhood in 2020, Othello Station Pharmacy is owned by Dr. Ahmed Ali, Dr. Abdirahman Tache, and Abdikadir Athur. Offering services in multiple languages, the pharmacy caters to the specific needs of its customers.

Lee’s Family Pharmacy — Georgia
Serving Atlanta’s Southside for over 30 years, Lee’s Family Pharmacy is led by Dr. Stedman Lee and Dr. Sylvester Lee. The pharmacy offers traditional prescriptions, naturopathic remedies, and personalized care while remaining an active part of the local community.

Economy Drug Store — Florida
Founded in 1951 by Howard Roberts, Economy Drug Store in Florida’s Frenchtown neighborhood has been providing healthcare access for over 70 years. The pharmacy emphasizes in-person service and community engagement.

Altev Community Pharmacy — Ohio
Opened in Cincinnati’s Avondale neighborhood in 2023, Altev Community Pharmacy, led by Dr. Emmanuel “Manny” Ayanjoke, fills a longstanding gap in local healthcare. The pharmacy provides COVID testing, vaccines, and other essential services for the community.

These Black-owned pharmacies play a vital role in providing healthcare while maintaining cultural connections and community trust across the United States.
