Tamar Huggins and her 13-year-old daughter, Talia Grant, have developed Spark Plug, a generative AI tool designed to make the AI revolution more racially equitable. Recently, the project secured $1.4 million in funding from TD Bank, Salesforce, the Government of Canada, NBA Canada, and the Foundation for Black Communities.
Spark Plug is built to prioritize diverse audiences, with a focus on cultural inclusivity and the experiences of historically marginalized communities. “Technology often overlooks Blackness, which can negatively impact Black communities,” says Huggins, the CEO of Tech Spark. “Our goal is to create technology that addresses these issues, offering meaningful, safe, and tailored solutions.”
The AI model draws from cultural history, including works from the Harlem Renaissance and Civil Rights activists, ensuring a rich, inclusive foundation. Spark Plug’s voice is inspired by Huggins’ daughter, aiming to connect with younger users. With the new funding, Spark Plug plans to scale its operations and reach broader audiences in the U.S. and Canada.
Spark Plug’s slogan, “AI Driven by the Culture,” reflects its commitment to inclusivity and diversity in technology, signaling a shift toward a future where young voices and diverse histories shape the future of generative AI.
