Big Boi Shares Quincy Jones' Sweet Surprise After Grammy Success

Big Boi has thought back to a moment when Quincy Jones gave him a surprise present after he and André 3000 won the top prize at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

Sir Luscious Left Foot discussed OutKast’s Grammys triumph and Elliott Wilson’s kind gesture in a clip from the new Patreon interview series Elliott Wilson Experience.

He also discussed whether or not the duo’s 2003 album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was a good or negative thing for being the final Hip Hop album to win Album of the Year at the Grammys.

“I mean, good in the sense of the level of respect that the group and the work got for that,” remarked Big Boi. “I recall Quincy Jones sending me a card and asking, ‘Are you surprised?’ when we won. And I asked, “How do you have my mothafuckin’ address?!”

OutKast won two other Grammys in 2004 in addition to Album of the Year: Best Rap Album (“Hey Ya!”) and Best Urban/Alternative Performance. They were also nominated for Producer of the Year, Best Music Video, Short Form (“Hey Ya!”), Record of the Year, and Short Form (“Hey Ya!”).

After Lauryn Hill, whose debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill won the coveted Album of the Year title in 1999, the renowned Atlanta duo became just the second rap artist to do so. She also made history by becoming the first woman to win five or more Grammy Awards in one evening.
