Beating the Odds: Stephan Myers on Self-Taught Law, Legal Battles & Finding Purpose.

In the latest episode of The Bounceback Podcast, host B. Luke sits down with Stephan Myers, also known as Bells or Proos, for a raw and unfiltered conversation about his extraordinary journey—from incarceration to self-education, legal victories, and a relentless pursuit of purpose.

Surviving the Unthinkable

Myers’ life took a devastating turn in 2012 when he suffered a traumatic brain injury after being stabbed with a butcher knife in Quincy, MA. The attack left lasting effects, but rather than allowing it to define him, Myers channeled his pain into self-improvement and advocacy.

Beating the Odds: Learning the Law & Fighting for Justice

While incarcerated in multiple facilities—including Plymouth, Essex, and Bristol County jails, as well as Bridgewater State Hospital—Myers became self-taught in law. What started as a means of navigating his own case soon became a way to help others. He proudly recalled defending himself against kidnapping charges that could have resulted in a life sentence, ultimately leading to a mistrial. His work on legal motions has since extended to assisting inmates with special needs and mental health challenges.

Prosae Healing: A Mission Rooted in Self-Reliance

Inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s philosophy of self-reliance, Myers founded Prosae Healing, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals take control of their lives—whether through legal assistance, mentorship, or creative expression. The name “Prosae” translates to “for self,” emphasizing his belief in personal accountability and self-empowerment.

From Prison Cells to College Classrooms

Despite his turbulent past, Myers is 13 months away from earning his MBA, recently celebrating the completion of a certificate/degree program. His pursuit of education is a testament to his resilience and refusal to be defined by his past mistakes.

A Lawsuit & a Bold Prediction

Beyond his nonprofit and legal work, Myers has an ongoing lawsuit against a hospital related to his 2012 brain injury. He confidently predicts that within 18 months, he’ll be a multi-millionaire through legal settlements. His determination suggests that this isn’t just wishful thinking—it’s part of his carefully laid-out plan.

Creative Expression as a Means of Survival

While serving time in isolation, Myers discovered his love for music and writing. Whether crafting songs, poems, books, or legal motions, creativity became both an escape and a tool for transformation. His ability to blend street slang, legal jargon, and philosophical insights makes for a unique storytelling style—one that captivates and challenges his audience.

“The Greatest Tragedy Isn’t Dying—It’s Living Without Purpose”

At the heart of Myers’ message is a profound philosophy: life’s greatest tragedy isn’t death, but living without purpose. His story embodies redemption, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of something greater.
