BAM Hosts 39th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy on Monday, Jan. 20, at BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House. This marks the 39th Annual Brooklyn Tribute, described as New York City’s largest event honoring Dr. King.

The program includes performances such as Kiri Moore’s excerpt from Judith Jamison’s Divining and a gospel-infused set by The Fire Ensemble, a community choir centering BIPOC and queer voices. Carlotta Walls LaNier, the youngest of the Little Rock Nine, will deliver the keynote address, reflecting on her role in desegregating Central High School.

Family activities hosted by BAMKids include mural-making and movement workshops inspired by Dr. King’s vision. Additionally, BAM Rose Cinemas will screen Ernest Cole: Lost and Found, a documentary on the South African photographer, at 1:00 p.m.

The tribute is free and open to the public. Visit BAM.org for tickets, seating, and a full schedule of events.
