One of Mannie Fresh’s many songs, “Back Dat Azz Up,” stands out above all the others. According to him, this is because of the song’s “romantic” vibe.
At the 2023 Lovers and Friends Festival, Mannie Fresh spoke with HipHopDX together with Pimpin’ and Parlae of Dem Franchize Boyz. The renowned producer and the group spoke with host Jeremy Hecht on a range of subjects, including Lil Uzi Vert and their favorite dance fad of all time.
Mannie continued the conversation by saying that Dem Franchize Boyz were among the final generations of performers that just danced and enjoyed themselves. Everything has changed to be about who is the most gangster, in his opinion: “Like wait, y’all ain’t dancing no more? You guys that gangsta?” he inquired.
“I love when people smile and have fun, ain’t nothing wrong with that,” he continued.
Even Pimpin’ and Parlae joined in to discuss some of their favorite performers who are reviving Hip Hop’s dance scene, such as Lil Uzi Vert and the dance frenzy surrounding “Just Wanna Rock.” The topic of the Franchize Boyz’s hit and its associated dance was also brought up.
As a producer and DJ, Mannie sees it as something that contemporary musicians might not be able to achieve.
It wasn’t meant as a jab, but he added, “You probably won’t hear none of the new shit played at a wedding reception five years from now.” He also gave the Franchize Boyz credit for their hit song’s longevity.
When asked which song he prefers to play when DJing, Mannie immediately responded with one of his biggest hits, “Back Dat Azz Up,” from Juvenile’s 400 Degreez album.
The song, like “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It,” has spanned generations and sustained a sentimental bond with listeners over time. It is even played at weddings and graduations. It is, nonetheless, regarded by Mannie as “the greatest love song of all time.”
