A new documentary on Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, the 13-time Grammy-winning songwriter and producer, is now in production, backed by HarbourView Equity Partners. Emmy-nominated director Chris Moukarbel and creator Kenya Barris are directing the project.
The film will feature Babyface in in-depth interviews about his songwriting and production process, career highs and lows, and collaborations with artists including Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Beyoncé, Eric Clapton, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, and SZA. Footage will also include behind-the-scenes and live concert performances at The Palms in Las Vegas.
The documentary will explore his co-founding of LaFace Records with Antonio “L.A.” Reid, which launched careers of Usher, TLC, OutKast, P!nk, and Ciara, as well as his contributions to hit film soundtracks like The Bodyguard, Boomerang, Soul Food, and Waiting to Exhale, now celebrating its 30th anniversary. He also produced the Oscar-winning duet “When You Believe” for The Prince of Egypt.
Babyface’s career includes 16 No. 1 pop singles, 45 No. 1 R&B singles, 125 top 10 hits, and seven BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year honors. Moukarbel said Babyface’s imprint on music is “massive,” while Barris called him a “culture-defining hitmaker.” Sherrese Clarke of HarbourView added the documentary celebrates Babyface’s genius, legacy, and lasting influence on music.
