During the empowering “titties out” period, Janelle Monáe is receiving criticism when social media users uncovered an interview from ten years ago in which she advocated for other views.
The Age of Pleasure singer claimed in an Essence interview from May 2013 that she was purposefully keeping her clothes on to show young women another way.
Janelle Monáe stated in the 2013 interview that “people don’t ask JAY-Z to take his shirt off when he rhymes.” “Sex is not something I achieve by baring my skin… It was my responsibility to show individuals and young females that there was an alternative.
Many people believed that the comments had become hypocritical as they reappeared again because Monáe has been flaunting her breasts rather frequently lately and recently admitted to Rolling Stone that she is “much happier when my titties are out and I can run around free.”
One commenter on Instagram wrote: “It’s called she trying sell albums lol,” and another added: “Sad to say, but money and fame do change some people.” Another person said: “She literally ‘changed’ from trying to show girls a better way to being on some nut shit.”
But not everyone shared that sentiment. Many others encouraged her development and remarked that after a decade, someone should unquestionably have changed.
One commenter said, “It’s ok to change your mind and evolve.” Someone else remarked, “People can’t grow or develop?” Another person said: “She demonstrated that to you for over ten years. Her current time is different.
With her seductive, NSFW “Lipstick Lover” music video, in which she displayed her boobs alongside footage of her singing to a woman’s nude butt, Janelle Monáe launched her shirtless revolution earlier this month.
The next day, Monáe made even more news when she raised up her blouse and briefly jiggled their breasts in front of the audience while singing at a party honoring the song’s debut.
The Age of Pleasure, Janelle Monáe’s new album, will be released on vinyl on June 9. The artwork features a close-up painting of her breasts. She tweeted about this earlier this week.
However, fans don’t simply have to purchase a vinyl copy of The Age of Pleasure to get a visual treat. Monáe is depicted swimming naked underwater on the album’s cover image for both the digital and CD formats.
