Apple is in early talks with OpenAI and Anthropic about using their AI models to enhance the next version of Siri, according to Bloomberg. The company has reportedly asked both firms to adapt their models for Apple’s cloud infrastructure as part of a test.
If Apple replaces its own Foundation Models—recently open-sourced to developers—with third-party models, it would signal a major shift in its AI strategy. While ChatGPT already integrates with Apple Intelligence, it currently functions as an add-on, not the core AI system.
Apple first announced a major Siri redesign at WWDC 2024, but internal challenges have led to repeated delays, now pushing the expected release to 2026 or later. The project is now overseen by Mike Rockwell, the Vision Pro creator, who has explored options including Claude, Gemini, and even a potential acquisition of Perplexity.
Apple maintains the delay is about meeting quality standards. “We don’t want to disappoint customers,” said Apple SVP Greg Joswiak.
Meanwhile, Meta is also accelerating its AI push. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally recruiting researchers for a new Superintelligence lab, with some OpenAI staff already accepting offers.
