A recent Wall Street Journal report indicates that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has engaged in talks with Apple regarding the integration of its generative AI technology into Apple’s newly announced Apple Intelligence platform. Apple, a newcomer to generative AI, unveiled Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, emphasizing partnerships for specialized tasks. At the event, Craig Federighi, Apple’s software leader, highlighted OpenAI’s ChatGPT as their initial partner, citing it as the optimal choice for current users. Federighi also mentioned plans to integrate Google Gemini.
In addition to Meta, AI startups Anthropic and Perplexity have expressed interest in collaborating with Apple to introduce their own generative AI models. This potential multi-partnership approach could allow end-users to select their preferred generative AI provider. According to sources familiar with the matter cited by the WSJ, Apple is not seeking monetary compensation from its AI partners, instead planning to generate revenue through premium subscriptions to genAI services, likely taking a percentage to boost its Services division income.
While discussions between Apple and Meta are ongoing and not finalized, other companies are also vying for Apple’s attention as it explores potential new revenue streams amidst regulatory pressures. Analysts predict that a significant portion of Apple’s customer base may opt for premium genAI subscriptions, reflecting growing interest in integrated AI services.
